Drivers of Uber and other ride-based ride services have been accused of sexual assaults across the country including recently in San Antonio.
A report on KHOU stated a driver in the Texas city faces charges of assault. He is accused of raping a young woman after driving her home in late 2016.
The woman was at a bar. The report stated she was so intoxicated that she passed out in the bathroom of the club. The staff helped her outside, where an Uber was waiting for her.
Police said Gabriel Vasquez helped the woman into her apartment because she could not walk easily. The report states he took her to her bed and started to undress her. Police say he then raped her.
The 22-year-old victim contacted police and Uber the next day, according to the San Antonio Police Department. Uber said Vasquez no longer drives for the ride-sharing service.
The incident again led to questions about how Uber vets its drivers. Uber says it puts all of its drivers through a comprehensive background check. Drivers with felonies are not allowed to drive.
KHOU reported Vasquez had no criminal record and would not have been barred from driving.
The TV station stated Uber users in San Antonio are questioning why Uber did not bring in stricter fingerprint background checks that the city requested three years ago.
San Antonio saw a stand-off between city authorities and Uber and Lyft. The ride share companies pulled out in April 2015 and returned six months later. The city backed down and made background fingerprint checks optional.
Ride share drivers have been hit with sexual assault charges across the country. In California, an Uber driver was recently charged with raping a 17-year-old girl in Laguna Beach.
Orange County prosecutors accuse Samer Mahran, 23, of picking up a teen near a Huntington Beach bar in November. According to reports, the girl was drunk and the driver failed to return her to her Laguna Beach home.
Mahran was charged with one felony count of rape by use of drugs, one felony count of sexual penetration of a child over age 14 by foreign object and force, forcible oral copulation upon a minor over 14 years of age and a felony count of unlawful sexual intercourse.
Sexual felony offenses are serious by their very nature and sex crimes often result in incarceration on conviction. These cases can be difficult and evidence may be compromised if a witness was intoxicated. If you have been charged with a felony offense, please call the Medlin Law Firm at (682) 204-4066.
