DALLAS – Accidents related to driving under the influence of alcohol remained increased in the past 10 years in Texas.
According to National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Texas was known for the high number of DUI accidents and deaths in 2015.
GEICO is requesting motorists in Texas to recommit themselves to save their life as well as the lives of sober drivers on the roadways. Government Employees Insurance Company, abbreviated as GEICO, is the 2nd largest private passenger auto insurance company in the United States. It was started back in 1936 and it provides auto insurance service to thousands of motorists every year.
According to Dan Beacom, vice president of GEICO’s regional operations, “It’s important for Texans to make safety a top priority every time they get behind the wheel. Setting a safe driving example is the key to reversing this alarming trend in Texas.”
GEICO urges motorists to check the list for safe driving:
Avoid Distractions – Distraction is a main cause of car accidents, along with several others, including DUI. A driver should avoid all kind of distractions, including discussing serious matters with passengers while driving and sending messages through their cell phone. In most cases, individuals don’t see what is in front of their vehicles when they are paying equal attention to other activities while behind the wheel, which becomes the cause of accidents and fatalities.
Plan Ahead – Almost 35 percent of accidents and fatalities occur due to driving under the influence of alcohol in Texas. One should plan to get back home safe if he/she is going to a party or celebration where he/she will be drinking alcohol. It is a good idea to use a taxi, to ask a sober friend to drop them back home or to use public transport to get back home.
Aggressive Driving – It includes tailgating, weaving through traffic and rude gestures, which are to be avoided so you do not land in some serious issue. If there is someone violating the laws and rules, calm down and let the offender move on without fighting.
Avoid Speeding – Texas is known for having motorists who love to drive at a high rate of speed which is the cause of accidents in many cases. The driver should pay attention to the weather condition and other factors while driving. Driving at slow speed helps because it allows ample time to react in case something goes wrong.
