Ryan Place All You Need To Know
Ryan Place is a an older neighborhood in downtown Fort Worth. It was founded in 1911 by developer John C. Ryan. Many of the fanciest homes here were built in the 1920s. Many of the homes have Mediterranean stuck and Georgian brick. The area went into decline during the Great Depression as people were unable to maintain the large, stately homes, though smaller homes can be found here, too. For example, there are some two bedroom, one bath starter homes in this community. This will cost 200,000 to 300,000 dollars. A 3000 square foot mansion costs around a million dollars. People pay a premium to live in a slower-paced community that is close to the Medical District and several colleges. There has been redevelopment in the area, but the local home owner’s association has imposed limits.
No new homes were built during this time. The recovery after World War 2 didn’t help much, because Fort Worth residents were moving to the new suburbs. In 1969, residents came together to start the Ryan Place Improvement Association. And they opposed the city’s plan to widen Fifth and Sixth avenues to avoid cutting the neighborhood in half. They won their battle. Their efforts led to Elizabeth Boulevard being added to the National Register of Historic Places. This made Ryan Place the only residential historic district in the city. More recently, Fairmount-Southside became a historic district in its own right.
Residents can quickly reach Cook Children’s Medical Center by going north on Eight Street. That street forms the western boundary of the neighborhood. It turns into Cleburne Road as it curves west. If residents go north on Eighth Avenue or Hemphill Street, you’ll reach Rosedale. You can take that west to Chisholm Trail Parkway and I-30.
Railroad tracks running NE to SW are the main eastern boundary. That separates it from the triangular South Hemphill Heights neighborhood. Residents can go north on Hemphill Street and then go west on Allen Avenue to reach John Peter Smith hospital.
Hemphill Street marks the eastern boundary for two blocks. West Jessamine Street serves as the northern boundary. West Berry Street is the southern border for the neighborhood. Shaw Clarke is south of the South Hemphill Heights / Ryan Place area.
EM Daggett Elementary School and the affiliated Montessori school are located in this neighborhood. Daggett Middle School is officially outside of the neighborhood boundaries though it is just a block north of the elementary school bearing the same name. The only real park in the area is Daggett Park.
R.L. Paschal High School is two blocks west of western edge of the subdivision. This area is aptly called the Paschal Area. If you were to head west of that, you’d hit Texas Christian University or TCU. Leibrock Village, home of the Brite Divinity School, is actually closer.
I-35 West is a short distance to the east. Morningside Elementary School and Morningside Middle School are on the other side of the highway. Our Lady of Victory Catholic School is located near the intersection of Hemphill and Shaw. The Our Lady of Victory campus also includes the Victory Arts Center.
