Breathalyzer tests are not always accurate. The breathalyzer is actually called the intoxilyzer in Texas; it’s wildly inaccurate. It supposedly is measuring how much light is disrupted by alcohol molecules present in the sample chamber after a person has blown through the machine. But, there’s many problems because the machine actually might be reading things other than alcohol and thinking that they’re alcohol, raising the score to a higher testing that’s accurate because it’s reading additional things, or it may be reading alcohol that’s not coming from the person’s lungs.
For it to be accurate it needs to alcohol that’s coming from deep in the person’s lungs, but actually it may be coming from the mouth if there’s some residual mouth alcohol. If a person burps, belches, has some heartburn, or gastroesophageal reflux, there can be gases escaping from the stomach that are bringing alcohol vapors up and then the machine starts reading that in addition to what’s coming from the lungs making this test much higher than it should be. Being very inaccurate and unfair, that’s a good reason why you should refuse the breath test.
