Crime rates on college campuses have made headlines in recent years. Rape allegations, in particular, have sparked a public debate about safety.
Recently, FBI figures highlighted the crime rates at Texas colleges last year.
The highest crime rates on a college campus in Texas were at Rice University in Houston which recorded 3,171 crime incidents per 100,000 students in 2015.
Rapes and other crimes are a concern on college campuses
However, the TV station KHOU reported Johnny Whitehead, the Chief of Police at Rice University, said it was inaccurate to characterize Rice as the most dangerous campus in the state. He said most of the reported crimes were bicycle thefts.
Rice University, Austin College, and Texas Southern University had the three highest crime rates in the state.
TSU saw the highest number of violent crimes in Houston with 13 incidents reported last year. Houston Baptist University recorded 10 violent crimes in 2015. Only six violent crimes were reported at Rice University in 2015.

ABC News reported on how a student at the University of Oklahoma was temporarily suspended and accused of taking part in an offensive group chat aimed at a black freshman.
Police have are also investigating an alleged threat against a Muslim student near the University of Michigan amid racially-charged incidents across the country.
In San Diego in California, a San Diego State University student was reportedly threatened by two men who made comments about Muslims, according to police.
SDSU President Elliot Hirshman said in a statement the woman appeared to have been targeted because of her Muslim faith and because she was wearing a hijab.
University colleges have come under pressure to improve their systems for reporting rapes on campuses over the last few years following some high profile incidents.
A report on PBS stated only a small percentage of rape assault victims on college campuses end up with police departments. It cited a Justice Department report.
The research found about one in 10 rape victims don’t think their ordeal is important enough to bring to the attention of police. There is also a fear that college authorities won’t or can’t help. About one in five said they fear reprisal.
