If you are using an ignition interlock to drive after a DWI conviction, you will have to pass a breath test every time you get into your car or it won’t work.
It goes without saying that you should not be drinking alcohol. You should also avoid certain household products that contain alcohol. These products could also push you over the 0.08 blood/alcohol limit for a DWI charge in rare circumstances if you are using them at the same time as drinking alcohol.
Cough medicine can contain alcohol
The website Soberlink contains a long list of products that contain alcohol. They include:
1 Cough syrups and other products like Benylin, Nyquil, Vicks and Night Relief (the latter contained 25 percent alcohol).
2 Vitamins including Ganatrix, Gevrabon and Niferix Elixir.
3 Mouth washes like Listermint, Listerine, Cepacol and Dr. Tichener’s (which contained 70 percent alcohol).
4 Antidiarrheals like Parelixer, Pabizol with Paregoric and Donnegal
5 Laxatives like Senecot Syrup, Cas Evac and Fletcher’s Castoria
6 Pain Relievers including Tylenol Extra Strength liquid & drops, and Valadol
7 Toothache/Cankersore. Cold sore products including Rid-A-Pain Dental Drops, Anbesol, Blister Clear and Dewitt Coldsore.
Some of these products contain very high amounts of alcohol. For instance, Dewitt contains 90 percent alcohol.
Foods like yeast, vinegar and some energy drinks contain traces of alcohol. Kombucha tea is another product that contains alcohol. The warnings on these products may be very small.
The danger with these products is there is potential to blow positive into an ignition interlock device even if you have not been drinking alcohol.
If you blow positive into an ignition interlock device when you are on probation, it can be a violation of your probation. These devices are very sensitive. Offenders should be warned about products that contain alcohol, but this may not always occur.
Although these are the main products that contain alcohol, you should always read the labels of any product you are taking if you are using an ignition interlock device.
Recently, the Texas legislature passed a bill requiring first-time DWI offenders to use an ignition interlock device if they want to keep driving.
If you tamper with the device, your license can be suspended. An ignition interlock typically costs between $50-$200 to install. Monthly rental fees for the devices are between $50-$100. The driver is also responsible for the maintenance of the machines.
