This past weekend marks the 10th anniversary of the Honored Hero Run. This event is a 5k, 10k, half marathon, and 1k Fun Run that benefits the Leukemia Lymphoma Society. Each year, young cancer patients in local Fort Worth hospitals generate a new hero logo. These young artists—and their depictions of their heroes—help bring recognition to those who suffer from various blood cancers. The 2018 Honored Hero and featured artist was Gavin Baker, an 11-year-old diagnosed with a type of leukemia.
In previous years, the Honored Hero Run has seen a high of over 100 participants, and since its creation the Run has donated over $152,000 to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. The family-friendly atmosphere allows those affected by blood cancer, as well as individuals who know someone who has battled blood cancer, to come together as a community to raise awareness of blood cancer research.
The race is designed as a fundraiser for the local chapter and national organization of the Leukemia Lymphoma Society in a way for people near and far to come together. In addition to raising funds through sponsorship, the event also created a space for individuals to donate blood and sign up for a bone marrow donor program.
