Historic Southside
Overview
Historic Southside is the largest historic district in the southwestern United States. The website describes the area as Fairmont National Historic District. It is downtown from Fort Worth where the historic homes of Fairmont were ‘bespoke’ built in the 1800s, some even ordered from a Sears catalog.
The Fairmont Southside District .54 square miles and is nestled between four major roads and they are, Hemphill Street, Jessamine Street, Eighth Avenue, and Magnolia Avenue to the north.
Employment
This old part of town is verging on the medical district. Employment is available in health, education, retail and financial services. Back in the 1840s Fort Worth was an army outpost. The town and area around Sundance Square was the center of the Longhorn cattle industry.
History
During the Civil War, Fort Worth was deprived of money food, and other supplies, this was a major economic disaster that caused the population to dwindle and dealt an economic blow to the cattle industry. At this time the railroad was being slowly laid down and was finally completed in 1876. Fort Worth was then able to supply a regional market through railway transportation networks.
There was quite a lot of crime in the old area of the town at the time, and gambling was taking over, and dance halls sprang up.
The first prohibition was in place in 1889, and an offensive was released on gambling by the Church. In spite of the crime in the city center, it continued to grow and prosper and steadily welcomed migrants.
Entertainment
For residents who live in Historic Southside, there is plenty to do The Fort Worth Stockyards are now a National Historic District nearby that has been reinvented as restaurants, bars, and a venue for country music called Billy Bob’s. One of the restaurants is run by celebrity chef Tim Love of Iron Chef America, and other leading chefs run restaurants in the neighborhood.
