South Hemphill Heights All You Need To Know

The South Hemphill Heights neighborhood is several blocks west of Purple Heart Trail and east of Texas Christian University. Berry Street passes through the neighborhood. Capps Park is the only large park in the area. The area is unusual for having a rail line from the northern edge of the neighborhood. You have to take a street like Berry to get across the tracks.

The Travis Academy of Fine Arts is located in South Hemphill Heights. Our Lady of Victory Catholic School sits just south of the neighborhood’s southern boundary. The same is true of George C. Clarke Elementary School. E. M. Dagget Elementary School and Daggett Montessori School are a short distance north of the neighborhood. The Victory Forest Park along Biddison Street is south of Our Lady of Victory, but that puts it within walking distance for residents in South Hemphill Heights.

South Hemphill Heights is a large neighborhood containing roughly 30,000 people. Just over half of residents own their own homes. You can find many World War 2 era and older single-family homes on 3,000 to 7,000 square foot lots. Many have columns holding up the second story or loft with a large front porch, a relic from an era when most didn’t have air conditioning. (Roughly 4,000 homes in the area were built before 1939.) Most housing here consists of single-family detached homes, though there is some multi-family housing. Being an older neighborhood, it is more walkable than average. Walk Score gives it a 70 out of 100. It has some public transit, resulting in a transit score of 38. It has a bike score of 62.

It lacks the restrictions found in the Fairmount-Southside Historic District, one of the largest historic districts in the country and the largest in the Southwest. Homes here are cheaper, making them popular with new immigrants and young families.
