Sexual assault scandals have plagued universities across the country in recent years. In Texas, Baylor University has been hit by these claims as well as lawsuits.
The alleged sexual assaults are linked to the football team. Just before Christmas, CBS reported that the scandal is much more serious than previously believed.
Baylor University in Waco has what CBS describes as a “powerhouse football team.”
A report on “60 Minutes Sports” claimed that since 2011, 17 female students reported domestic assault or sexual assault charges.
As many as 19 players were reported to be implicated. The CBS report said the charges included at least four alleged gang rapes.
An investigation on “60 Minutes Sport” was carried out for about six months.
The story claimed some rapes were not properly investigated at the university that prides itself on its Christian values.
A new lawsuit in January 2017, claimed the issue at Baylor was even more serious than previously thought. The New York Times reported it listed 52 rapes committed by 31 players from 2011 to 2014. The number is considerably higher than the figure the university has talked about.
The Waco Police Department was reported to have been informed of the assaults in 2013. The lawsuit claimed the investigation was superficial in nature and none of the alleged assailants were interviewed.
Last year, the Washington Post reported on the universities with the most reports of sexual assaults. The article was based on 2014 figures that predated the scandal at Baylor.
Nearly 100 universities and colleges reported at least 10 rapes over the course of 2014.
No Texas institutions appeared in the study. Brown University, a private Ivy League institution in Providence, R.I., reported the highest numbers of sexual assaults – 43, the same number as the University of Connecticut.
In Texas, a sexual assault is usually a second-degree felony. It carries a sentence of two to twenty years in a state prison and/or a fine of up to $10,000.
A rape may also be a first-degree felony, carrying a sentence of five to 99 years in a state prison and a fine of up to $10,000.
